Library Elevator “Under Construction”

July 22, 2008 by bishoppaynelibrary

If you have visited the Bishop Payne Library in the past week, you may have noticed signs of elevator repair.  Several gentlemen have been here nearly every day, diligently making their way through the many steps in the process.  Over the next week we are told we will experience the breaking up of concrete in the shaft floor as well as welding in the shaft–today a vacuum truck spent several hours on the premises.  Our hours have already been adjusted this week to accomodate these repairs, and more adjustments may be necessary.  We are grateful for the understanding and patience of the seminary community as we brave these repairs!  Please call the library at 703-461-1731 to check our hours each day.

Celebration of Service for Hien Doan

June 23, 2008 by bishoppaynelibrary

This past Friday June 20th was the Celebration of Service for Hien Doan.  Family, friends, current employees, and former employees gathered to honor Hien and her twenty-five years of service at the Bishop Payne Library. Her daughter Trang Nguyen spoke during the program and told the story of how her mother, Hien, fled Vietnam after the fall of Saigon with her five children and husband. They arrived in Northern Virginia and shortly afterward, secured a job at the Bishop Payne Library. During her time as custodian in the library, Hien took great care and pride in the plants and flowers around the building. In honor of that, she was compared to an orchid and rose - the orchid representing beauty and the rose representing love.

We wish Hien well as she now finds time to spend with family and friends and we thank her for her faithful service to the Bishop Payne Library.

Stuck here on this desert isle

I want to sit and rest a while

I’m longing for green eggs and ham

Oh how I love them Sam I am

I grab my pole and make a wish

One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish

I have some luck with catching food

Which puts me in a Seussical mood

I think some thinks and thank God above

I have a copy of a book I love

A book that always makes me smile

That takes my mind from this desert isle

I make a hammock where I’m at

And grab my copy of The Cat in the Hat

1st Prize, winning the New Interpreter’s Bible Dictionary, vols. I & II AND the New Interpreter’s

NRSV: Anne Harris with

I would take with me the W.J. Craig edition of The Oxford Shakespeare, published in 1914.  This is a complete library in one volume, with all of Shakespeare’s plays and poems, thus I would have comedies, tragedies, adventures, fantasies, histories, and love poems at my disposal: readings for any mood. In addition, it is a large book and so it would double as a stool I could stand on when gathering coconuts, a table on which to eat the coconuts, or an altar beside which to pray for the soul of my bishop!

RefWorks Now Available

February 28, 2008 by bishoppaynelibrary

Have you dreamed of a software package that would automatically format footnotes and bibliography for you? If so, your dream is now a present reality.

Bishop Payne Library has subscribed to a bibliographic software package, RefWorks, which is now available to all VTS students and faculty. There is a link to RefWorks on the library catalog home page: http://librarycatalog.vts.edu, on the right side of the home page, just above “Electronic Resources.”

The first time that you use this software, you will need to establish a user name and password.  Full instructions on establishing an account and using RefWorks are available upon request – just email paynelib@vts.edu.

Library staff will be glad to demonstrate the software to you. Send your request to paynelib@vts.edu. There is also an online tutorial available on the RefWorks page, in the upper right-hand corner.

We hope that all VTS students will take advantage of this new software – it’s a great tool for papers and assignments.
