The Archives is a great repository for primary sources related to the Seminary, Bishop Payne Divinity School and the Diocese of Virginia. If you are conducting research about people associated with these, the Archives is an excellent place to look. Items contained in these collections include manuscripts, photographs, correspondence and ephemera.
One collection currently being processed is the Edmund Lee Woodward Papers. Dr. Woodward was a Richmond native, VTS graduate and founder of Shrine Mont. He personally built the open-air Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration, a place held very dear to the Virginia Episcopal Community. This collection includes many letters and photographs that illustrate the influential life that Dr. Woodward had within the Church.
Also among Dr. Woodward’s papers are older family documents that illustrate life in antebellum Virginia. From wills to court proceedings, letters to receipts, this one family’s collection can provide a glimpse of what life was like in the pre-Civil War South.
