The BPL is now decorated for Christmas…er…Advent.  In all actuality we are decorated for both.  We have our creche out, sans baby.  We have a tree, garland, and wreath.  As many of our patrons will leave us after final exams, we like to put decorations up about this time so that all can enjoy.  So, please enjoy!

Ralph Vaughan Williams

Posted in Welcome with tags , on December 4, 2008 by bishoppaynelibrary

2008 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1958.  Vaughan Williams is a very well-known and respected composer with ties to the Anglican church.

At the turn of the century he was among the very first to travel into the countryside to collect folk-songs and carols from singers, notating them for future generations to enjoy. As musical editor of The English Hymnal he composed several hymns that are now world-wide favourites (For all the Saints, Come down O love Divine). Later he also helped to edit The Oxford Book of Carols, with similar success.

In a long and productive life, music flowed from his creative pen in profusion. Hardly a musical genre was untouched or failed to be enriched by his work, which included nine symphonies, five operas, film music, ballet and stage music, several song cycles, church music and works for chorus and orchestra (above biographical info from the RVW Society website).

The BPL features RVW in its display case this month.  Please do drop by and have a look at this wonderful display.

Now in the BPL!

In response to suggestions made by the Environmental Stewardship Committee and the folks at Cokesbury (who so nicely displayed these books), the BPL has ordered several new books with a “green” focus.  The three pictured above are now available.

Elevator, Resurrected

Posted in Welcome on November 7, 2008 by bishoppaynelibrary

After enduring a process lasting several months, the Bishop Payne Library staff are happy to announce that the elevator is certified and ready to run.  The elevator was recently repaired and yet still off limits for weeks due to a pending 3rd party inspection.  Said inspection was performed today by a city inspector, and so it’s time for all adults and kiddies to come saddle up and ride the BPL elevator.

Happy Trails!
